Nachdem vor einer Woche ein stilles Update kam, gibt es diesmal genug um drüber zu schreiben. Neben diversen Bugfixes und kleinen Verbesserungen, habe ich über den Januar hinweg die Funktionen der <a href="/rpg-tools/dnd-item-list" rel="noreferrer" class="editor-link">D&amp;D Gegenstandsliste</a> denen der <a href="/rpg-tools/dnd-spell-list" rel="noreferrer" class="editor-link">Zauberliste</a> angepasst. Konkret heißt das:<ul class="editor-list-ul"><li value="1" class="editor-listitem">Es ist nun möglich sich eigene Gegenstände zu erstellen, diese zu bearbeiten, zu löschen und den Favoriten hinzuzufügen.</li><li value="2" class="editor-listitem">Selbst erstellte Gegenstände können ebenfalls im <a href="/rpg-tools/dnd-loot-table-generator" rel="noreferrer" class="editor-link">Loot-Generator</a> auftauchen.</li><li value="3" class="editor-listitem">Gefilterte Gegenstände lassen sich nun - wie Zauber - als handliche Karten zum Selberdrucken herunterladen. Zudem wurde die Lesbarkeit der Zauberkarten ein wenig verbessert.</li><li value="4" class="editor-listitem">Der CSV export &amp; import funktionert ebenfalls genau wie bei den Zaubern und gibt dir die Möglichkeit deine selbst erstellten Gegenstände mit anderen zu teilen.</li></ul>

Ein Feature, das schon länger angedacht war, jetzt aber erst rauskommt ist der CSV-Export und Import von D&amp;D Zaubern.Endlich ist es möglich, selbst angelegte Zauber auch mit Anderen zu teilen. Oder du kannst einfach alle Zauber von Mythical Ink exportieren und mit Excel oder Google-sheet öffnen. Leider ist auch das ein Feature, wofür ein Account benötigt wird. Aber anders geht es nicht. A feature that has been in the pipeline for some time but is only now being released is the CSV export and import of D&amp;D spells.Finally it is possible to share spells you have created with others. Das alte Design hat mich tatsächlich bereits seit längerer Zeit ziemlich gestört. Und das nahm mir auch ein wenig die Lust weiter an Mythical Ink zu arbeiten. Da waren zum Ersten viele inkonsistente Elemente, die auf der einen Seite anders aussahen, als auf der anderen, obwohl sie im Prinzip das Selbe gemacht haben. Dann hat das ganze Design nicht so richtig zu dem Inhalt der Seite gepasst. Einige Funktionen waren umständlich zu benutzen.Deswegen habe ich mich vor einiger Zeit zu einem Redesign durchgerungen. Das neben der Arbeit zu stemmen hat dann leider länger gedauert, als ich annahm. Aber es hatte zum Glück ja keine Eile, so dass ich mir die Zeit nehmen konnte es richtig zu machen. Und nun ist es endlich raus. Einige Dinge werde ich in den kommenden Wochen noch verbessern und dann habe ich hoffentlich wieder mehr Zeit und Lust an Inhalten zu arbeiten.Neben dem neuen Design kamen auch ein paar kleinere Features und Fixes online:<h2 class="editor-heading-h2" dir="ltr">Custom Spell Icons</h2>Es ist nun möglich für eigene Zauber ein Icon festzulegen. Das sollte jetzt um einiges besser aussehen.</li><li value="3" class="editor-listitem">Eigene Zauber, die ein Material eingetragen hatten, konnten nicht mehr bearbeitet werden.</li></ul> Und damit wünsche ich allen eine frohe Weihnachtszeit und guten Rutsch ins neue Jahr!

The old design had actually been bothering me for quite some time. And that also made me a little less keen to continue working on Mythical Ink. Firstly, there were a lot of inconsistent elements that looked different on one page than on the other, even though they basically did the same thing. Then the whole design didn't really match the content of the site. And some functions were awkward to use.That's why I decided some time ago to redesign the site. Unfortunately, it took longer than I expected to manage this alongside work. But fortunately there was no rush, so I was able to take my time and get it done properly. And now it's finally out. Es gibt einige neue Features hier auf Mythical Ink, die das Fundament für zukünftige Entwicklungen legen.<h2 class="editor-heading-h2" dir="ltr">Benutzerkonten</h2>Es ist jetzt möglich einen Account auf <a href="https://mythical.ink/join" class="editor-link">https://mythical.ink/join</a> zu erstellen.Warum sollte man das tun? Im Moment hat ein Account nur zwei große Vorteile. Erstens kann man eigene Zaubersprüche <a href="/rpg-tools/dnd-spell-list" rel="noreferrer" class="editor-link">in der Zauberliste</a> anlegen und diese dann als PDF-Karten herunterladen. Das funktioniert leider noch nicht perfekt, aber ich arbeite daran.Und zweitens kann man <a href="/rpg-tools/dungeon-generator" rel="noreferrer" class="editor-link">Dungeons</a> jetzt auch "in der Cloud" speichern, so dass man seine Karten auch auf anderen Geräten wieder öffnen kann oder wenn der Browsercache geleert wurde.Ich habe auch mit zusätzlichen Objekten im Dungeongenerator experimentiert. Um die Karten generieren zu können, müssen die eigenen Zauber zunächst in den Favoriten gespeichert werden.<h2 class="editor-heading-h2" dir="ltr">Dungeons "in der Cloud" speichern</h2>Das andere große Feature ist, dass man Dungeons nun unter seinem Account speichern kann, anstatt sie lokal im Browser zu speichern. So bleiben die Daten erhalten und man kann jederzeit und von überall darauf zugreifen.Eine weitere Funktion, die in Zukunft kommen wird, ist die Möglichkeit, Dungeons mit anderen zu teilen und sie als PDF in hoher Auflösung herunterzuladen. Einige Sachen funktionieren noch nicht 100% korrekt oder sehen noch unschön aus. Das sind Probleme, die ich in der Zukunft angehen werde. Ich möchte auch wieder weitere Inhalte erstellen. Karten zum runterladen, neue Objekte und Funktionen im Dungeongenerator und einiges mehr. Die Liste ist lang... zu lang...

At the moment an account has only two major advantages. Unfortunately, this doesn't work perfectly yet, but I'm working on it. And secondly, you can now save <a href="/rpg-tools/dungeon-generator" rel="noreferrer" class="editor-link">dungeons</a> "in the cloud" so that you can open your maps again on other devices or when the browser cache has been cleared. I have also experimented with additional objects in the dungeon generator. At the moment, however, there is only one additional carpet that you can place with an account. Unter Spieleentwicklern ist <a href="https://kenney.nl" target="_blank" class="editor-link">Kenney</a> ziemlich bekannt. Der niederländische Spieleentwickler(?) produziert regelmäßig absolut großartige Assets und stellt diese zum kostenlosen Download ins Netz. Und dann auch noch unter der CC-0-Lizenz. Man darf wirklich alles mit denen machen (außer NFTs erstellen - zum Glück). Ab und zu veröffentlicht Kenney auch mal das ein oder andere Spiel oder Tool, das es für kleines Geld zu haben gibt. Vor ein paar Tagen kam dann das Scribble Dungeon Set mit jeder Menge Bausteinen für Dungeons. Das Set musste ich natürlich prompt in den <a href="https://mythical.ink/rpg-tools/dungeon-generator" class="editor-link">Dungeon Generator</a> einbauen. Der Stil ist mal was Anderes und passt wunderbar in den Dungeon Generator. Ich hatte jedenfalls viel Spaß beim testen und herumspielen während ich die Grafiken eingebaut habe. Leider haben es nicht alle Teile aus dem Set geschafft, weil die mit dem Generator, wie ich ihn designed habe, keinen Sinn machen würden (Außenbereiche, Wände mit halber Länge, etc...).<img src="https://mythical.ink/img/blog/dungeon-with-kenneys-set.jpg" alt="Generierter Dungeon mit Kenneys Scribble Dungeon"> Im Hintergrund gab es noch ein, zwei weitere Verbesserungen. Hauptsächlich habe ich an der Performance geschraubt. Wenn man Gegenstände durch die Gegend schiebt fühlt sich das jetzt nicht mehr an, als würde man sich durch dicken Honig bewegen.Und damit wären wir auch schon wieder am Ende der Neuigkeiten. Among game developers, <a href="https://kenney.nl" target="_blank" class="editor-link">Kenney</a> is quite well known. The Dutch game developer(?) regularly produces absolutely great assets and puts them online for free. And even under the CC-0 licence. You are allowed to do really everything with them (except create NFTs - thank goodness). From time to time, Kenney also publishes the one or other game or tool that is available for little money. A few days ago, the Scribble Dungeon Set arrived with lots of building blocks for dungeons. Of course I had to add the set to the <a href="https://mythical.ink/rpg-tools/dungeon-generator" class="editor-link">Dungeon Generator</a>. The style is something different and fits wonderfully into the Dungeon Generator. Anyway, I had a lot of fun testing and playing around while I was adding the graphics. Unfortunately, not all pieces of the set made it into the dungeon generator since they wouldn't make sense with the generator as I designed it (outdoor areas, half-length walls, etc...).<img src="https://mythical.ink/img/blog/dungeon-with-kenneys-set.jpg" alt="Generated Dungeon with Kenney's Scribble Dungeon"> In the background, there were one or two more improvements. Mainly, I tweaked the performance. When you push items around, it no longer feels like you're moving through thick honey.And that brings us to the end of the news. Kenneys Scribble Dungeons

Erstmal: Frohes, neues Jahr, euch allen! Auf geht’s zu neuen Abenteuern in einem hoffentlich besserem Jahr als 2021.Ich habe grade v.2.2 vom <a href="https://mythical.ink/rpg-tools/dungeon-generator" class="editor-link">Dungeon Generator</a> released. Die größte Neuerung ist der neue, adaptive Algorithmus, der das Layout des Dungeons generiert. Solange die Summe von Breite und Höhe der Karte kleiner als 30 ist, ändert sich nichts. Ist der Dungeon aber zum Beispiel 20 x 20 Felder groß, wird ein neuer Algorithmus verwendet, der besser darin ist einzelne, separate Räume zu generieren.<img src="https://mythical.ink/img/blog/new-dungeon-generator-algorithm.png" alt="Beispiel alter vs. neuer Algorithmus">Ein neuer Hintergrund (Beton) ist ebenfalls hinzugekommen. Und es ist eine größere Änderung am Rendering hinzugekommen, die für mehr Abwechslung bei schraffierten Wänden sorgt.Aber das ist alles für den Moment. Meine To-Do-Liste ist immer noch übervoll und der Tag hat noch zu wenige Stunden.

First of all: Happy New Year to all of you! Off to new adventures in a hopefully better year than 2021.I just released v.2.2 of the <a href="https://mythical.ink/rpg-tools/dungeon-generator" class="editor-link">Dungeon Generator</a>. The biggest new feature of this update is the new adaptive algorithm which generates the layout of the dungeon. As long as the sum of the width and height of the map is less than 30, nothing changes. However, if the dungeon is 20 x 20 squares, for example, a new algorithm is applied that is better at generating individual, separate rooms.<img src="https://mythical.ink/img/blog/new-dungeon-generator-algorithm.png" alt="Beispiel alter vs. neuer Algorithmus">A new background (concrete) has also been added. And a major change to the rendering has been added, providing more variety to hatched walls.But that's all for now. My to-do list is still overflowing and the day still has too few hours.

Dieser Release sollte eigentlich kein Großer werden. Aber irgendwie ist ein etwas größeres Feature mit reingerutscht. Ich meine natürlich die Möglichkeit generierte Dungeons zu speichern und zu laden. Nebenher sind auch einige weitere, kleinere Features mit in den Release gekommen. Schauen wir doch mal genauer hin:<h2 class="editor-heading-h2" dir="ltr">Speichern &amp; Laden</h2>Du kannst deine generierten und ausgestalteten Dungeons jetzt komfortabel speichern. Dazu gibt es in der Toolbar zwei Buttons, die einen Speichern- bzw. Ladendialog öffnen. Zur Zeit werden die Dungeons im Local Storage des Browsers gespeichert. Das heißt der Speicherplatz ist darauf begrenzt, was dein jeweiliger Browser zulässt (meistens um die 2-5 MB). Das sollte allerdings für einige Karten ausreichen.Eine Möglichkeit die gespeicherten Dungeons als Datei herunter- und wieder hochladen zu können ist in Planung.<h2 class="editor-heading-h2" dir="ltr">Hilfe</h2>Ich habe mich auch endlich mal an eine <a href="https://mythical.ink/rpg-tools/dungeon-generator/help" class="editor-link">grundlegende Seite (bzw. ein Popup) mit Erklärungen</a> zu den einzelnen Funktionen gemacht, da der Dungeongenerator über die Zeit ja doch ziemlich gewachsen ist. Die Seite ist noch ein wenig rudimentär, sollte aber alles erklären, was man braucht, um loszulegen.<h2 class="editor-heading-h2" dir="ltr">Bewegen &amp; rotieren mit Pfeiltasten</h2>Selektierte Gegenstände können nun mit den Pfeiltasten bewegt werden. Wenn du dabei die Umschalttaste (Shift) gedrückt hältst, werden die Gegenstände von Quadrat nach Quadrat bewegt. Mit "," und "." kann der ausgewählte Gegenstand rotiert werden, ohne die Maus zu benutzten. Die Umschalttaste sorgt hier dafür, dass der Gegenstand in 45°-Inkrementen rotiert wird.<h2 class="editor-heading-h2" dir="ltr">Neue Böden</h2>Außerdem habe ich noch zwei neue Böden hinzugefügt. Einmal grade Linien und zum anderen gestrichelte Linien. Diese Böden passen zu allen Styles.

This release was not supposed to be a big one. But somehow a slightly bigger feature slipped in. I mean of course the possibility to save and load generated dungeons. Besides that, some other smaller features have also been included in the release. Let's take a closer look:<h2 class="editor-heading-h2" dir="ltr">Save &amp; Load</h2>You can now comfortably save your generated and designed dungeons. There are two buttons in the toolbar that open a save or load dialog. Currently the dungeons are saved in the local storage of the browser. That means the storage space is limited to what your browser allows (mostly around 2-5 MB). However, this should be enough for some maps. A possibility to download and upload the saved dungeons as a file is in and upload them again is in planning.<h2 class="editor-heading-h2" dir="ltr">Help</h2>I also finally got around to creating a <a href="https://mythical.ink/rpg-tools/dungeon-generator/help" class="editor-link">basic page (or popup) with explanations</a> of the individual functions, since the dungeon generator has grown quite a bit over time. The page is still a bit rudimentary, but should explain everything you need to get started.<h2 class="editor-heading-h2" dir="ltr">Move and rotate with arrow keys</h2>Selected objects can now be moved with the arrow keys. If you hold down the Shift key, the objects are moved from square to square. With "," and "." the selected object can be rotated without using the mouse. The Shift key here ensures that the object is rotated in 45° increments.<h2 class="editor-heading-h2" dir="ltr">New Floors</h2>I have also added two new floors. Once straight lines and the other dashed lines. These bottoms fit to all styles.

Heute habe ich die nächste, große Version des <a href="https://mythical-ink.com/rpg-tools/dungeon-generator" class="editor-link">Dungeongenerators</a> released. Es hat einige Zeit gedauert für etwas, das oberflächlich kaum wie ein großes Update aussieht. Allerdings hat sich vor allem unter der Haube einiges getan.<h2 class="editor-heading-h2" dir="ltr">Neues Layout</h2>Ich habe das Layout ein wenig geändert. Die ganzen Optionen und die Gegenstände sind an die linke Seite gerutscht. Das lässt dem Dungeon ein wenig mehr Platz. Insbesondere, wenn man ein Verlies im Portrait-Layout erstellt.<h2 class="editor-heading-h2" dir="ltr">Snapping</h2>Endlich, endlich , endlich! Man kann Gegenstände jetzt per "Snapping" innerhalb des Rasters bewegen. Hierzu reicht es einfach, während man ein Gegenstand platziert oder verschiebt, die Umschalttaste (Shift) gedrückt zu halten. Und schon funktioniert das auch mit dem genauen Platzieren von Türen ;) Kleiner Geheimtipp: Das funktioniert auch beim Rotieren von Gegenständen. Hält man während des Rotierens die Umschalttaste gedrückt, kann man das ausgewählte Objekt nur in 45° Schritten drehen.<h2 class="editor-heading-h2" dir="ltr">Neue Gegenstände</h2>Es gibt fünf neue Gegenstände. Ein paar Planken, ein Seil, eine Kiste und ein Haufen Gold. Keine Sorge, da kommt mit der Zeit noch mehr. Aber der Hauptaugenmerk dieses Releases lag halt nicht auf neuen Gegenständen. Denn die eigentliche, große Neuerung ist...<h2 class="editor-heading-h2" dir="ltr">Ein komplett neuer Dungeon-Renderer</h2>Im Grunde habe ich alles neu geschrieben um den Dungeongenerator schneller zu machen. Er lädt jetzt schneller und die einzelnen Operationen (generieren, editieren, Gegenstände platzieren, etc...) sind jetzt auch flüssiger als vorher. Das ist in erster Linie dem neuen Renderer zu verdanken, der auf Spritesheets statt einzelnen Bildern basiert. Aber auch ein paar andere Optimierungen unter der Haube sollten für eine flüssigere Erfahrung sorgen.Ich habe bereits viele, weitere Features im Backlog aber natürlich viel zu wenig Zeit. Deswegen wird es wohl wieder was dauern, bis ein größeres Update kommt.

Today I released the next, major version of the <a href="https://mythical-ink.com/rpg-tools/dungeon-generator" class="editor-link">dungeon generator</a>. It took some time for something that hardly looks like a big update on the surface. However, a lot has changed, especially under the hood.<h2 class="editor-heading-h2" dir="ltr">New layout</h2>I've changed the layout a bit. All the options and items have moved to the left side. This leaves a little more room for the dungeon. Especially if you create a dungeon in portrait layout.<h2 class="editor-heading-h2" dir="ltr">Snapping</h2>Finally, finally , finally! You can now move items within the grid via "snapping". To do this, simply hold down the Shift key while placing or moving an object. Now you can also place doors exactly on the grid ;) A little tip: This also works when rotating objects. If you hold down the Shift key while rotating, you can only rotate the selected object in 45° steps.<h2 class="editor-heading-h2" dir="ltr">New items</h2>There are five new items. A few planks, a rope, a crate and a pile of gold. Don't worry, more will come eventually. But the main focus of this release was just not on new items. Because the real, big news is...<h2 class="editor-heading-h2" dir="ltr">A completely new dungeon renderer</h2>Basically, I rewrote everything to make the dungeon generator faster. It now loads faster and the individual operations (generate, edit, place items, etc...) are now also smoother than before. This is primarily thanks to the new renderer, which is based on spritesheets instead of individual images. But a few other optimizations under the hood should also make for a smoother experience.I already have many, more features in the backlog but of course far too little time. Therefore it will probably take some time again until a major update comes.

Dungeon Generator 2.0

Ich arbeite nun schon sehr lange daran neben dem <a href="https://mythical.ink/rpg-tools/dnd-loot-table-generator" class="editor-link">Lootgenerator</a>, dem <a href="https://mythical.ink/rpg-tools/dnd-item-list" class="editor-link">Gegenstandsverzeichnis</a> und dem <a href="https://mythical.ink/rpg-tools/dungeon-generator" class="editor-link">Dungeon-Generator</a> auch noch eine <a href="https://mythical.ink/rpg-tools/dnd-spell-list" class="editor-link">vollumfängliche Liste an D&amp;D 5E Zaubern</a> online zu bringen. Auch hierbei ist mein Anspruch natürlich wieder sowohl die englische, als auch die deutsche Version anzubieten. Und da es kein deutschsprachiges Pendant zum SRD gibt, musste ich jeden einzelnen Zauber von Hand übersetzen. Naja, nicht ganz von Hand. Ich habe letztendlich einen Online-Übersetzer verwendet, der mir dank einer Glossar-Funktion die Arbeit enorm erleichtert hat. Trotzdem hat es ziemlich lange gedauert knapp 400 Zauber und deren Eigenschaften zu übersetzen.Diese Liste enthält selbstverständlich nur die Zauber aus dem SRD. Auch wenn ich gerne die ganzen Inhalte aus sämtlichen offiziellen Ergänzungen (Xanathars, Tashas, etc...) mit einbinden würde. Aber dann hätte ich Wizards Anwälte schneller auf der Treppe stehen als ich "Andere machen das doch auch!" sagen könnte.Selbst die offiziellen, deutschen der Versionen der Zauber stehen unter keiner offenen Lizenz, soweit ich weiß. Deswegen auch die manuelle Arbeit die Zauber selber zu übersetzen, was laut Open Game License erlaubt ist.Aber... Das heißt leider auch, dass die deutschen Zauber hier auf der Seite nicht unbedingt für bare Münze genommen werden können. Es haben sich bestimmt Fehler bei Konvertierungen (Fuß zu Meter, Pound zu KG, etc.) und Formulierung eingeschlichen. Ich kann die Korrektheit also nicht garantieren.Ansonsten hoffe ich, dass dieses neue Werkzeug trotzdem hilfreich für einige deutschsprachige Spieler ist.

I have been working for a long time now on bringing online a <a href="https://mythical.ink/rpg-tools/dnd-spell-list" class="editor-link">comprehensive list of D&amp;D 5E spells</a> besides the <a href="https://mythical.ink/rpg-tools/dnd-loot-table-generator" class="editor-link">loot generator</a>, the <a href="https://mythical.ink/rpg-tools/dnd-item-list" class="editor-link">item directory</a> and the <a href="https://mythical.ink/rpg-tools/dungeon-generator" class="editor-link">dungeon generator</a>. Here, too, my aim is of course to offer both the English and the German version. And since there is no German-language counterpart to the SRD, I had to translate every single spell by hand. Well, not entirely by hand. I ended up using an online translator, which made my job a lot easier thanks to a glossary function. Nevertheless, it took quite a long time to translate almost 400 spells and their properties.This list, of course, only contains the spells from the SRD. Even if I would like to include all the content from all the official supplements (Xanathars, Tashas, etc...). But then I would have Wizard's lawyers standing on the stairs faster than I could say "Others do that too!".Even the official German versions of the spells are not under an open licence, as far as I know. Hence the manual work of translating the spells myself, which is allowed under the Open Game License.But... Unfortunately, this also means that the spells in German here on the site cannot necessarily be taken at face value. There are certainly errors in conversions (feet to metres, pounds to kilograms, etc.) and mistakes in wording that have crept in. So I cannot guarantee the correctness.Other than that, I hope that this new tool is nevertheless helpful for some players.

Mein erstes Kickstarter Projekt "Deck of Dungeons" ist nun endlich ausgeliefert - bzw. befindet sich noch im Versand - und ich versuche hier mal meine Gedanken dazu zu ordnen. Denn am Ende lief alles doch ganz anders als erwartet.<h2 class="editor-heading-h2" dir="ltr">Erwartung</h2>Fangen wir damit an, was ich mir von dem Deck of Dungeons Kickstarter erhofft habe bzw. mit welchen Erwartungen ich da rangegangen bin.Ich habe das komplette Deck of Dungeons im Voraus fertig gestellt. Zumindest die geplanten 36 Karten. Um sicher zu gehen, dass mir nicht nur die digitale Version gefällt habe ich das Deck als Prototyp bestellt. Zum Glück. Es gefiel mir zunächst nicht. Also ein wenig nachbearbeitet und noch einen Prototypen bestellt. Das hat jedesmal um die 25€ gekostet, war mir die Sache aber wert. Ich wollte halt genau wissen was die Unterstützer nachher erwartet.Nach ein wenig Recherche und unter Einfluss meiner eher pessimistischen Natur habe ich kalkuliert, dass vielleicht 100 bis 150 Leute bereit wären das Deck of Dungeons zu unterstützen. Ein paar das physische Deck, einige die digitale Version und wenn ich Glück habe auch ein paar, die beides haben möchten. Das würde grade so reichen um den Druck und Versand zu finanzieren.Überdies wollte ich das ganze Projekt so einfach wie möglich halten. Das war mein erstes Projekt. Also keine Stretchgoals oder sonstigen Extras. Die digitalen Versionen schicke ich per Hand raus. Sollten ja nicht so viele sein.<h2 class="editor-heading-h2" dir="ltr">Wirklichkeit</h2>Vergleichen wir das jetzt mal mit der Realität.Das Deck fühlte sich plötzlich sehr, sehr leicht an. 36 Karten sind halt nicht so viel. Also gut - doch ein Stretchgoal. 54 Katen, wenn wir mehr als 300 Unterstützer zusammenbekommen. Dass das passiert war damals für mich unvorstellbar.Tja, und dann kam das Finanzierungsziel doch schon am ersten Tag rein. Okay, okay. Keine Panik. Das ist der erste Tag. Danach kommt wahrscheinlich kaum noch jemand dazu. Werbung mache ich a auch kaum. Und ich habe vergleichsweise halt so gut wie keine Follower. Also durchatmen...Doch irgendwie ging es so weiter. Und mit jedem Tag kamen neue Anfragen. Mehr Stretchgoals, Händlerrabatt, mehr als ein Deck - was passiert hier grade? Damit habe ich nicht gerechnet. Darauf bin ich gar nicht vorbereitet aber gut, das schwierigste (Druck &amp; Versand) übernimmt ja nachher MPS für mich.Fast forward. Ein paar Tage später musste ich feststellen, dass MPS aufgehört hat auf Anfragen zu reagieren. Per Mail, Facebook und auch die Website war nicht mehr erreichbar. Das war der Zeitpunkt an dem für mich Panik angesagt war. Der Mauszeiger schwebte förmlich schon über dem "Projekt abbrechen" Link bei Kickstarter. Zum Glück habe ich mich dann nach Alternativen umgeschaut. Eine neue Druckerei musste her, die meine Karten nach meinen Spezifikationen drucken kann. Und am besten auch noch den Versand an den Endkunden übernimmt. Um auf Nummer sicher zu gehen wollte ich mich überdies an ein deutsches Unternehmen wenden. Teurer, langsamer aber hoffentlich auch zuverlässiger. Gefunden habe ich dann die <a href="https://www.assaltenburger.de/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="editor-link">ASS-Altenburger</a>. Die machen zwar den Versand nicht, aber reagieren wenigstens angemessen schnell und waren über den ganzen Prozess super hilfreich und geduldig. Und eine Versandfirma habe ich dann auch noch finden können. Die Leute von <a href="https://getbyrd.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="editor-link">Byrd</a> haben mir super geholfen und mir gelinde gesagt das Hinterteil gerettet. Denn hätte ich 1500 Sendungen selber, nach der Arbeit verpacken und versenden müssen hätte sich das Projekt nochmal um ein, zwei Monate verschoben.Auch der Versand der digitalen Version war jetzt plötzlich nicht mehr so einfach. Ich kann nicht einfach tausende Mails per hand senden. Das würde nochmal Wochen in Anspruch nehmen. Also habe ich mich dafür entschieden die digitale Version einmal bei Gumroad hochzuladen, per Script jede Menge 100% Discount codes zu generieren und dann diese per Mail zu versenden. Ebenfalls per Script. Ich brauche nicht zu erwähnen, dass meine Domain innerhalb von Minuten bei allen größeren Anbietern geblockt wurde. Die Codes musste danach im Schneckentempo raus. Mit einer Mail pro 90 Sekunden. Das hat einigermaßen geklappt. Leider haben viele Leute ihren Code nicht erhalten und mussten den über die nächsten Wochen bei mir anfragen.<h2 class="editor-heading-h2" dir="ltr">Und was lernen wir daraus?</h2>Ich bin mir noch nicht sicher, ob ich tatsächlich ein weiteres Projekt in der Richtung machen werde. Am Ende war das eine Menge Arbeit und ich bin froh, wenn jeder seine Decks erhalten hat. Aber nichts desto trotz habe ich eine Menge gelernt. Und das alleine ist schon ein großer Gewinn.1.) Zunächst schadet es bei der Planung sicher nicht, für jeden Punkt in der Produktions- und Lieferkette einen Plan B zu haben. Und zwar nicht nur einen Gedanken daran, sondern einen konkreten Plan. Was für andere Druckereien gibt es, was sind da die Preise, wie bekomme ich die Waren verpackt und versandt? Wie handhabe ich Retouren und Reklamationen? Man sollte den kompletten Prozess vom Ende der Kickstarterkampagne bis hin zum zurücknehmen der Ware im Problemfall aufdröseln und für jeden Schritt zwei Optionen haben. Eigentlich ganz offensichtlich, oder?2.) Rechne mit einem knappen Erfolg (um Enttäuschungen vorzubeugen), plane aber auch für den Fall, dass das Projekt plötzlich 20x größer wird. Dies betrifft hauptsächlich zwei Sachen. Den Zeitraum in dem das Produkt versandt wird und der Aufwand der für Kommunikation draufgeht. Es geht weitaus schneller 100 Kartenspiele in China zu drucken (5-10 Tage), als 2000 in Deutschland (6-10 Wochen). Plane also weitaus mehr Zeit als du denkst. Ich musste peinliche Updates schreiben und Leute vertrösten. Das tut weh und knabbert am Stolz. Selbst mit unglaublichen lieben und verständnisvollen Unterstützern. Der Aufwand für die Kommunikation sollte auch nicht unterschätzt werden. Klar, bei 100 Leuten kann man damit rechnen, dass vielleicht 10 Leute einen Kommentar oder eine Nachricht schreiben. Das ist nichts. Aber die Anzahl an Anfragen steigt linear mit der Anzahl der Unterstützer. Möglicherweise sogar mehr als linear, wenn man bedenkt, dass durch mehr Unterstützer auch andere Probleme kommen, die man kommunizieren muss. Dazu kommen noch Updates. Einer pro Monat ist minimum, aber grade während die Kampagne läuft oder wenn es an den Versand geht sollte mit erhöhter Frequenz gepostet werden. Dann kommen noch Anfragen von Marketingagenturen und anderen Creators, die gerne Crosspromotions machen würden. Das wird mehr, je mehr Unterstützer ein Projekt hat.3.) Die Kickstarter-Tools sind ziemlich genial. Nur beim managen der Pledges sind deutliche Schwächen zu erkennen. Mehr als ein Artikel? Händler? Late-Pledge? Addons? Das kann man alles vergessen. Man sollte sich unbedingt vorher schlau machen, ob man nicht doch einen der bekannten Pledge-Manager wie backerkit nutzen möchte. Die schnorcheln natürlich nochmal was vom Umsatz ab aber eventuell ist es das wert, wenn dadurch Zeit und Frustration gespart werden kann.<h2 class="editor-heading-h2" dir="ltr">Was kommt als nächstes?</h2>So, genug von der Vergangenheit. Wie sieht die Zukunft für Mythical Ink aus? Ehrlich gesagt weiß ich es noch nicht ganz. Zunächst werde ich schauen, dass ich einige übrig gebliebene Kopien des Deck of Dungeon irgendwie vertreibe. Dann überleg ich ob ich ein weiteres, ähnliches Kickstarterprojekt ins Leben rufe.Aber ich will auch weiter an der Website arbeiten. Der Loot-Generator und das Gegenstandsverzeichnis bieten eine tolle Datengrundlage für weitere Tools in die selbe Richtung und auch sonst habe ich einige Ideen was hier noch hinzukommen könnte.Außerdem liebäugle ich zur Zeit auch ein wenig mit dem Thema Gamedev. Und zwar sowohl digital als auch analog. Es wäre schon eine Herausforderung ein Spiel zu designen und von vorne bis hinten umzusetzen. Egal ob Brett- oder Computerspiel.Aber eins nach dem Anderen. Ich sehe erst mal zu, dass das Kapitel Deck of Dungeons sauber abgeschlossen wird.

My first Kickstarter project "<a href="https://mythical.ink/deck-of-dungeons" class="editor-link">Deck of Dungeons</a>" has finally been shipped - or is still in the process of beeing shipped - and I try to put my thoughts about it in order here. Because in the end everything went quite differently than expected.<h2 class="editor-heading-h2" dir="ltr">Expectation</h2>Let's start with what I was hoping to get out of the Deck of Dungeons Kickstarter, or rather, what my expectations were going into it.I finished the complete Deck of Dungeons in advance. At least the planned 36 cards. To make sure it wasn't just the digital version I liked I ordered the deck as a prototype. Thank goodness for that. I didn't like it at first. So I reworked it a bit and ordered another prototype. It cost about 25€ each time, but it was worth it. I just wanted to know exactly what awaits the supporters afterwards.After a little research, and influenced by my rather pessimistic nature, I calculated that maybe 100 to 150 people would be willing to support the Deck of Dungeons. A few for the physical deck, a few for the digital version, and if I'm lucky, a few who want both. That would be just enough to finance the printing and shipping.Furthermore, I wanted to keep the whole project as simple as possible. This was my first project after all. So no stretch goals or other extras and I will send out the digital versions by hand. Shouldn't be that many.<h2 class="editor-heading-h2" dir="ltr">Reality</h2>Now let's compare that with reality.The deck suddenly felt very, very light. 36 cards are just not that much. Alright - a stretch goal after all. 54 cards, if we get more than 300 supporters. That this would happen was unimaginable for me at that time.Well, and then the funding goal came in on the first day after all. Okay, okay. Don't panic. That's the first day. After that, there will probably be barely anyone else who will back the project. I hardly do any advertising. And I have relatively few followers. So take a breath...But somehow it went on like that. And with each day came new requests. More stretch goals, retailer discounts, more than one deck - what's happening right now? I did not expect that. I'm not prepared for that at all, but well, the most difficult part (printing &amp; shipping) will be taken care of by MPS later anyway. I can just lean back and answer comments.Fast forward. A few days later I noticed that MPS stopped responding to requests. By mail, Facebook and also the website was no longer available. That was the time when panic set in for me. The mouse pointer was literally already hovering over the "Cancel project" link on Kickstarter. Fortunately, I then looked around for alternatives. I needed a new print shop that could print my cards to my specifications. And preferably one that would also handle shipping to the end customer. To be on the safe side, I also wanted to go with a German company. More expensive, slower but hopefully more reliable. I then found <a href="https://www.assaltenburger.de/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="editor-link">ASS-Altenburger</a>. They don't do shipping, but at least respond reasonably quickly and were super helpful and patient throughout the process. And I was also able to find a shipping company. The folks at <a href="https://getbyrd.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="editor-link">Byrd</a> have been super helpful and saved my rear end if I may say so. If I had to pack and ship 1500 shipments myself after work, the project would have been delayed another month or two.Also sending the digital version was now suddenly not so easy. I can't just send thousands of mails by hand. That would take weeks again. So I decided to upload the digital version to Gumroad, generate a lot of 100% discount codes by script and then send them by mail. Also by script. I don't need to mention that my domain was blocked within minutes on all major email service. The codes had to go out at a snail's pace after that. With one mail per 90 seconds. That worked to some extent. Unfortunately, many people did not receive their code and had to ask me for it over the next weeks.<h2 class="editor-heading-h2" dir="ltr">And what do we learn from this?</h2>I'm not sure yet if I'll actually do another project along those lines. In the end, it was a lot of work and I'm glad once everyone has received their decks. But nonetheless, I learned a lot. And that alone is a big win.1.) First, when planning, it certainly doesn't hurt to have a Plan B for every step in the production and supply chain. And not just a thought about it, but a concrete plan. What other printers are there, what are their prices, how do I get the goods packaged and shipped? How do I handle returns and complaints? You should break down the entire process from the end of the Kickstarter campaign to taking the goods back in case of a problem and have two options for each step. Quite obvious really, isn't it?2.) Anticipate a close success (to prevent disappointment), but also plan for the event that the project suddenly becomes 20x larger. This mainly concerns two things. The time it takes to ship the product and the time it takes to communicate. It is much faster to print 100 decks in China (5-10 days) than 2000 in Germany (6-10 weeks). So plan far more time than you think. I've had to write embarrassing updates. That hurts. Even with incredible loving and understanding supporters. The amount of time and effort it takes to communicate shouldn't be underestimated either. Sure, with 100 people you can expect maybe 10 people to comment or message. That's nothing. But the number of requests increases linearly with the number of supporters. Possibly even more than linear, considering that with more supporters come other issues you need to communicate. In addition to messages &amp; comments there are th project updates. One per month is the bare minimum, but especially during the campaign or when it comes to shipping, you should post with increased frequency. Then there are requests from marketing agencies and other creators who would like to do cross promotions. This will increase the more supporters a project has.3.) The Kickstarter tools are pretty ingenious. Only the management of the pledges shows clear weaknesses. More than one item? Merchant? Late pledge? Addons? Forget about all that. You should definitely think about using one of the well-known pledge managers like backerkit. Of course, they take some money from your sales, but it might be worth it if you can save time and frustration.<h2 class="editor-heading-h2" dir="ltr">What's next?</h2>So, enough about the past. What does the future hold for Mythical Ink? Honestly, I don't quite know yet. First, I'm going to see about distributing some leftover copies of the Deck of Dungeon somehow. Then I'll consider launching another, similar Kickstarter project.But I also want to continue working on the website. The loot generator and the item directory offer a great data basis for further tools in the same direction and I also have some other ideas what could be added here.In addition, I am currently also flirting a bit with the topic of gamedev. Both digital and analog. It would be a challenge to design a game and implement it from front to back. No matter if board or computer game.But one thing at a time. For now, I'll concentrate on closing the Deck of Dungeons chapter cleanly.

Neben dem bereits bestehendem Loot-Generator, der schon seit einiger Zeit online ist, gibt es nun auch eine D&amp;D Gegenstandsverzeichnis. Die Liste enthält alle magischen und nichtmagischen Gegenstände, die das SRD hergibt plus einig Homebrew Gegenstände. Selbstverständlich mit Suche und erweiterten Filtermöglichkeiten.Ich habe lange überlegt ob ich das überhaupt umsetzen soll. Schließlich gibt es doch D&amp;D Beyond. Also warum den Aufwand machen, wenn es dort die selbe Funktionalität gibt? Für mich gab es zwei Gründe (eigentlich drei):<h2 class="editor-heading-h2" dir="ltr">Kosten der Gegenstände</h2>Es ist häufig schwer (grade für magische Gegenstände) die genauen Kosten zu finden. Zumindestens konnte ich auf D&amp;D beyond und einigen anderen Seiten zu vielen Gegenständen keine entsprechenden Daten finden. Da ich die ganzen Kosten bereits für den Loot-Generator in meiner Datenbank hinterlegt habe musste ich das zum Glück nicht noch nachpflegen.<h2 class="editor-heading-h2" dir="ltr">Deutsche Übersetzung</h2>Ich habe eine deutschsprachige Gruppe und es ist mühsam die Beschreibungen "on-the-fly" immer (sinnvoll) ins Deutsche zu übersetzen. Es gibt zwar <a href="http://dnddeutsch.de" target="__blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="editor-link">dnddeutsch.de</a>, allerdings werden da nur die Namen der Gegenstände auf deutsch angeboten. Die Beschreibungen gibt es nur auf englisch. Und leider gibt es D&amp;D Beyond und das SRD auch nur auf englisch.Also habe ich mir die Mühe gemacht und tatsächlich alle 540 Gegenstände in meiner Datenbank selber auf deutsch übersetzt. Hierzu habe ich jede Beschreibung bei DeepL zunächst automatisch übersetzen lassen und dann nachgebessert so gut es ging. Die Übersetzungen sind nicht 100% korrekt. Fähigkeiten, Eigenschaften und Zauber sind eventuell nicht konform mit den deutschen Regelbüchern aber es ist auf jeden Fall schonmal besser als nichts.<h2 class="editor-heading-h2" dir="ltr">Ich bin ein Bastler</h2>Das ist der dritte Grund. Ich liebe es meine Werkzeuge, Helfer, Karten, Figuren und so weiter selber zu basteln. Warum also nicht auch meine digitalen Helfer? So kann ich außerdem Funktionen, die ich gerne hätte, die es aber nicht unbedingt woanders gibt selbst implementieren. Eine erste solche Funktion ist zum Beispiel die Möglichkeit einzelne Items aus dem Loot-Generator oder dem Gegenstandsverzeichnis zu bookmarken und später bei der Suche nur meine markierten Gegenstände anzuzeigen. Ich habe auch noch mehr Funktionen im Sinn, die ich mit der Zeit implementieren möchte. Aber dazu gibt es dann ein entsprechendes Update.Jetzt freue ich mich erstmal, dass nach endlos scheinender Arbeit endlich ein zweites RPG Tool online gegangen ist, das vielleicht auch anderen Spielleitern dabei hilft eine Gruppe Helden durch ihre Abenteuer zu leiten.

Besides the already existing Loot-Generator, which is already online for some time, there is now also a D&amp;D item directory. The list contains all magical and non-magical items that the SRD offers plus some homebrew items. Of course with search and advanced filtering options.I thought long and hard if I should implement this at all. After all there is D&amp;D Beyond. So why make the effort, if the same functionality is already available there? For me there were two reasons (actually three):<h2 class="editor-heading-h2" dir="ltr">Cost of the items</h2>It is often difficult (especially for magic items) to find the exact costs. At least on D&amp;D Beyond and some other sites I couldn't find any data for many items. Since I already have all the costs in my database for the Loot-Generator, I didn't have to update it.<h2 class="editor-heading-h2" dir="ltr">German translation</h2>I have a German-speaking group and it is tedious to translate the descriptions "on-the-fly" (meaningfully) into German. There is dnddeutsch.de, but only the names of the items are offered in German. The descriptions are only available in English. And unfortunately D&amp;D Beyond and the SRD are also only available in English.So I made the effort and actually translated all 540 items in my database to German myself. For this I first translated every description with DeepL automatically and then I improved it as good as I could. The translations are not 100% correct. Abilities, traits and spells might not be conform to the German rulebooks but it's better than nothing.<h2 class="editor-heading-h2" dir="ltr">I am a tinkerer</h2>This is the third reason. I love to make my own tools, helpers, cards, figures and so on. So why not make my digital helpers too? This also allows me to implement features myself that I would like to have but don't necessarily exist elsewhere. A first such function is for example the possibility to bookmark single items from the loot generator or the item directory and to show only my bookmarked items later when searching. I also have more functions in mind that I want to implement over time. But there will be an update for that.For now, I'm happy that after seemingly endless work, a second RPG tool has finally gone online that may help other game masters guide a group of heroes through their adventures. Besides the already existing Loot-Generator, which is already online for some time, there is now also a D&amp;D item directory. The list contains all magical and non-magical items that the SRD offers plus some homebrew items. Of course with search and advanced filtering options.
