The abjuration school of magic encompasses protective spells. They create a physical or magical barrier, negate magical or physical abilities, harm trespassers, or even banish the subject of the spell to another plane of existence.

Abjuration

Sometimes a special ability or spell tells you that you have advantage or disadvantage on an ability check, a saving throw, or an attack roll. When that happens, you roll a second d20 when you make the roll. Use the higher of the two rolls if you have advantage, and use the lower roll if you have disadvantage. For example, if you have disadvantage and roll a 17 and a 5, you use the 5. If you instead have advantage and roll those numbers, you use the 17. If multiple situations affect a roll and each one grants advantage or imposes disadvantage on it, you don't roll more than one additional d20. If two favorable situations grant advantage, for example, you still roll only one additional d20. If circumstances cause a roll to have both advantage and disadvantage, you are considered to have neither of them, and you roll one d20. This is true even if multiple circumstances impose disadvantage and only one grants advantage or vice versa. In such a situation, you have neither advantage nor disadvantage. When you have advantage or disadvantage and something in the game, such as the halfling's Lucky trait, lets you reroll the d20, you can reroll only one of the dice. You choose which one. For example, if a halfling has advantage or disadvantage on an ability check and rolls a 1 and a 13, the halfling could use the Lucky trait to reroll the 1. You usually gain advantage or disadvantage through the use of special abilities, actions, or spells. Inspiration can also give a character advantage. The GM can also decide that circumstances influence a roll in one direction or the other and grant advantage or impose disadvantage as a result.

Advantage & Disadvantage

- A blinded creature can't see and automatically fails any ability check that requires sight. - Attack rolls against the creature have advantage, and the creature's attack rolls have disadvantage.

Blinded

- A charmed creature can't attack the charmer or target the charmer with harmful abilities or magical effects. - The charmer has advantage on any ability check to interact socially with the creature.

Charmed

The conjuration school of arcane magic calls materials, creatures or energy to the caster and can also be reversed to send creatures to other places, either over long distances or even to a whole different plane of existence.

Conjuration

- A deafened creature can't hear and automatically fails any ability check that requires hearing.

Deafened

The divination school of magic contains spells that enable the caster to learn secrets long forgotten, interpret dreams, predict the future, to find hidden things or foil deceptive spells. Among them are included detect magic and scry.

Divination

Spells from the school of enchantment affect the minds of others, influencing or controlling their behavior. This school includes the spells charm person and mind fog.

Enchantment

The evocation school of magic included spells that manipulated energy or tapped an unseen source of power in order to produce a desired end. In effect, they created something out of nothing. Many of these spells produced spectacular effects, and evocation spells could deal large amounts of damage. Many iconic offensive spells such as magic missile, lightning bolt and fireball were of the evocation school.

Evocation

Some special abilities and environmental hazards, such as starvation and the long-­term effects of freezing or scorching temperatures, can lead to a special condition called exhaustion. Exhaustion is measured in six levels. An effect can give a creature one or more levels of exhaustion, as specified in the effect's description. Level 1: Disadvantage on ability checks Level 2: Speed halved Level 3: Disadvantage on attack rolls and saving throws Level 4: Hit point maximum halved Level 5: Speed reduced to 0 Level 6: Death If an already exhausted creature suffers another effect that causes exhaustion, its current level of exhaustion increases by the amount specified in the effect's description. A creature suffers the effect of its current level of exhaustion as well as all lower levels. For example, a creature suffering level 2 exhaustion has its speed halved and has disadvantage on ability checks. An effect that removes exhaustion reduces its level as specified in the effect's description, with all exhaustion effects ending if a creature's exhaustion level is reduced below 1. Finishing a long rest reduces a creature's exhaustion level by 1, provided that the creature has also ingested some food and drink.

Fatigued

- A frightened creature has disadvantage on ability checks and attack rolls while the source of its fear is within line of sight. - The creature can't willingly move closer to the source of its fear.

Frightened

- A grappled creature's speed becomes 0, and it can't benefit from any bonus to its speed. - The condition ends if the grappler is [incapacitated]. - The condition also ends if an effect removes the grappled creature from the reach of the grappler or grappling effect, such as when a creature is hurled away by the thunderwave spell.

Grappled

The Illusion school includes spells that deceive the senses or minds of others. They cause people to see things that are not there, not see things that are there, hear phantom noises, or remember things that never happened. Among these spells are included invisibility and disguise self.

Illusion

An incapacitated creature can't take actions or reactions.

Incapacitated

- An invisible creature is impossible to see without the aid of magic or a special sense. For the purpose of hiding, the creature is heavily obscured. The creature's location can be detected by any noise it makes or any tracks it leaves. - Attack rolls against the creature have disadvantage, and the creature's attack rolls have advantage.

Invisible

Casting some spells requires particular objects, specified in parentheses in the component entry. A character can use a component pouch or a spellcasting focus (found in “Equipment”) in place of the components specified for a spell. But if a cost is indicated for a component, a character must have that specific component before he or she can cast the spell. If a spell states that a material component is consumed by the spell, the caster must provide this component for each casting of the spell. A spellcaster must have a hand free to access a spell's material components—or to hold a spellcasting focus—but it can be the same hand that he or she uses to perform somatic components.

Material

School of Necromancy magic whose spells manipulate the power of death, unlife, and the life force. Spells involving the undead made up a large portion of this school, including animate dead and finger of death.

Necromancy

- A paralyzed creature is [incapacitated] and can't move or speak. - The creature automatically fails Strength and Dexterity saving throws. - Attack rolls against the creature have advantage. - Any attack that hits the creature is a critical hit if the attacker is within 5 feet of the creature.

Paralyzed

- A petrified creature is transformed, along with any nonmagical object it is wearing or carrying, into a solid inanimate substance (usually stone). Its weight increases by a factor of ten, and it ceases aging. - The creature is [incapacitated], can't move or speak, and is unaware of its surroundings. - Attack rolls against the creature have advantage. - The creature automatically fails Strength and Dexterity saving throws. - The creature has resistance to all damage. - The creature is immune to poison and disease, although a poison or disease already in its system is suspended, not neutralized.

Petrified

A poisoned creature has disadvantage on attack rolls and ability checks.

Poisoned

- A prone creature's only movement option is to crawl, unless it stands up and thereby ends the condition. - The creature has disadvantage on attack rolls. - An attack roll against the creature has advantage if the attacker is within 5 feet of the creature. Otherwise, the attack roll has disadvantage.

Prone

- A restrained creature's speed becomes 0, and it can't benefit from any bonus to its speed. - Attack rolls against the creature have advantage, and the creature's attack rolls have disadvantage. - The creature has disadvantage on Dexterity saving throws.

Restrained

Spellcasting gestures might include a forceful gesticulation or an intricate set of gestures. If a spell requires a somatic component, the caster must have free use of at least one hand to perform these gestures.

Somatic

A stunned creature is [incapacitated], can't move, and can speak only falteringly. The creature automatically fails Strength and Dexterity saving throws. Attack rolls against the creature have advantage.

Stunned

The transmutation school of magic consisted of spells that changed the physical properties of some creature, thing, or condition. The school was previously known as alteration.

Transmutation

- An unconscious creature is [incapacitated], can't move or speak, and is unaware of its surroundings - The creature drops whatever it's holding and falls [prone]. - The creature automatically fails Strength and Dexterity saving throws. - Attack rolls against the creature have advantage. - Any attack that hits the creature is a critical hit if the attacker is within 5 feet of the creature.

Unconscious

Most spells require the chanting of mystic words. The words themselves aren’t the source of the spell’s power; rather, the particular combination of sounds, with specific pitch and resonance, sets the threads of magic in motion. Thus, a character who is gagged or in an area of silence, such as one created by the silence spell, can't cast a spell with a verbal component.

Tentacle

Melee Weapon Attack: +9 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 12 (2d6 + 5) bludgeoning damage. If the target is a creature, it must succeed on a DC 14 Constitution saving throw or become diseased. The disease has no effect for 1 minute and can be removed by any magic that cures disease. After 1 minute, the diseased creature's skin becomes translucent and slimy, the creature can't regain hit points unless it is underwater, and the disease can be removed only by heal or another disease-curing spell of 6th level or higher. When the creature is outside a body of water, it takes 6 (1d12) acid damage every 10 minutes unless moisture is applied to the skin before 10 minutes have passed.

Enslave (3/Day)

The aboleth targets one creature it can see within 30 feet of it. The target must succeed on a DC 14 Wisdom saving throw or be magically charmed by the aboleth until the aboleth dies or until it is on a different plane of existence from the target. The charmed target is under the aboleth's control and can't take reactions, and the aboleth and the target can communicate telepathically with each other over any distance.

The aboleth is a large, intelligent aquatic monster with tentacles and magical abilities. It is hostile and feared for its power.

Detect

The aboleth makes a Wisdom (Perception) check.

(Costs 2 Actions). One creature charmed by the aboleth takes 10 (3d6) psychic damage, and the aboleth regains hit points equal to the damage the creature takes.

While underwater, the aboleth is surrounded by transformative mucus. A creature that touches the aboleth or that hits it with a melee attack while within 5 feet of it must make a DC 14 Constitution saving throw. On a failure, the creature is diseased for 1d4 hours. The diseased creature can breathe only underwater.

Probing Telepathy

If a creature communicates telepathically with the aboleth, the aboleth learns the creature's greatest desires if the aboleth can see the creature.

Change Shape

The dragon can move across and climb icy surfaces without needing to make an ability check. Additionally, difficult terrain composed of ice or snow doesn't cost it extra movement.

Melee Weapon Attack: +8 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 14 (2d8 + 5) bludgeoning damage.

Whirlwind (Recharge 4–6)

Each creature in the elemental's space must make a DC 13 Strength saving throw. On a failure, a target takes 15 (3d8 + 2) bludgeoning damage and is flung up 20 feet away from the elemental in a random direction and knocked prone. If a thrown target strikes an object, such as a wall or floor, the target takes 3 (1d6) bludgeoning damage for every 10 feet it was thrown. If the target is thrown at another creature, that creature must succeed on a DC 13 Dexterity saving throw or take the same damage and be knocked prone.

Air Elemental

Air Form

The elemental can enter a hostile creature's space and stop there. It can move through a space as narrow as 1 inch wide without squeezing.

Allosaurus

The dragon exhales gas in a 90-foot cone. Each creature in that area must succeed on a DC 22 Constitution saving throw. On a failed save, the creature can't use reactions, its speed is halved, and it can't make more than one attack on its turn. In addition, the creature can use either an action or a bonus action on its turn, but not both. These effects last for 1 minute. The creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself with a successful save.
